Grand Lawn Bowling Club

Standing Rules

Approved by the members at a members’ meeting on November 19th 2019

1.  DRESS CODE:

  • Flat, smooth-soled shoes with no heels are mandatory on the green.

  • Moderate casual attire, including T-shirts (but not undershirts or “muscle” shirts).

  • For inter-community matches, if approved by SCGCAM, whites or club colors are mandatory and shirts must have collars.

2.   USE OF GREEN:

  • Properly attired guests may accompany a member. The member is responsible for ensuring that the guest abides by club rules.

  • When playing or practicing, a foot mat must be used.

  • Drinks are not permitted on the green.

  • All bags, towels, water and any other objects, placed on the bank during play must be well away from the green itself.

  • Members must leave the green and surrounding area clean and in the condition they were found.

  • All equipment must be returned to the storage room and properly stored.  A board member must be notified of any equipment in need of repair.

  • Members shall ensure the storage room and storage cupboards are securely locked.

 3.   EXPERIENCE (for new members):

  • It is a requirement that new members seek appropriate training, to be provided free of charge, from a club instructor.

 4.   MEMBERSHIP DUES:

  • Annual membership dues are due January 1st. If dues remain unpaid at January 31st, the member will be removed from the club roster.

  • Dues paid by new members between October and December will also cover the following calendar year.

  • New members are required to purchase name tags and draw tags with payment of their dues.

5.   LOBBING:

  • Repetitive lobbing of a bowl during delivery is not permitted as it will damage the green.

  • A “lobbed” bowl is a delivery wherein the bowl is released 6 inches or more above the ground or is otherwise delivered in a manner that will harm the green. The term “lobbed” will also cover bowls dropped onto the green in preparation of play.

  • If a player is not able to self-correct the problem then:

    1. The player should seek assistance from an experienced player or club instructor (at no charge.)

    2. If this assistance does not correct the problem the player should consider purchasing a bowling “arm” or other similar device. The club has such an “arm” for players to try.

    3. If the above points do not resolve the problem then the player will be required to use a “lobbing mat.” This mat will be provided by the club. Before bowling, the player will place the mat on the ground where the bowl will land and then, after bowling, will pick up the mat. This process will be repeated each time the player bowls.

    4. If the bowl is released from such a height that even the mat will not afford protection to the green then this will also be regarded as non-compliance.

  • If a member continues to lob, the club Board will issue a written warning.

  • If the member still continues to lob, the member will be suspended from the club for one week.

  • If the member still continues to lob, the member will be suspended from the club for up to one month.

  • If the member still continues to lob, the member’s membership of the club will be terminated.

  • Any suspended or terminated member has the right of appeal.

 6.   DRIVES:

  • These are bowls delivered at much higher speed (weight) than usual and are not permitted during social bowling due to safety concerns. Other lesser weighted shots are permitted and the individual bowler must use his/her common sense to ensure that the delivery speed is appropriately restricted.

7.   GREEN MAINTENANCE:

  • Annually, at a membership meeting, members must nominate a person to supervise the maintenance of the green in accordance with the manual provided by the installers of the green. This supervisor will then seek volunteers to form a regular maintenance team.
